Ela is a photographer and a biochemist, based in London ON. Her Photography utilizes her science background to explore the overpowering forces that compel natural world to create life. This body of work is created using a process called photo elasticity; a long abandoned visualization technique from the field of materials engineering.
This technique was originally developed to visualize deformations in translucent models made of hard resins and photographed in polarized light. The resulting images were used to analyze stresses revealed by bursts of light and vibrant colors. Using organic gels which were familiar to her as a biochemist, their natural predisposition to form translucent, life-like structures combined with their amazing ability to glow when illuminated and viewed in dark cross-polarized light field inspired this very collection.
